Dear Shayne Families,
Welcome back to Shayne Elementary School for the 2008-2009 school year. We hope you have had an enjoyable summer and are ready to return for the coming year. We welcome a new assistant principal, Wallace Peoples, to the Shayne family as well as two new teachers, Irene Fernandez (Spanish) and Betsy Breegle (second grade). We are excited about the addition of technology resources and a brand new computer lab.
It is our goal to have everyone fully registered and ready to begin class on Monday, August 11. Classroom instruction for pre-k through fourth grade students will egin on the first day of school which will be a half day (8 AM-11:30 AM). The second day is a full day (8AM-3 PM) for grades one through four, but it will be another half day for prek and kindergarten students. Dismissal for prek on half days will be 10:30 AM. From now until the beginning of school, we have the office open between 8 and 4PM each day to register new students and accept forms needed for the completion of school registration (immunizations, birth certificates, etc.). Please call before you come to make sure there is someone in the office to help you.
You should receive a letter from the transportation department the last week in July that will tell you the time and location of your bus route for the school year. This information can also be accessed at the MNPS web site (www.mnps.org). At that site, you can type in your home address and learn your bus route and time. Although we will be happy to have you bring your child on the first day, we encourage you to take advantage of the bus service that is being extended to all Shayne students for the remainder of the year.
On Wednesday, August 6, there will be an orientation for kindergarten parents at 6:30 PM in the cafeteria. It is strongly suggested that you leave your child home as this is an information session for parents. Thursday afternoon, August 7, our staff with the support of the PTA will host a "meet and greet" event for parents and students. From 4:30-6 PM, parents and students re invited to meet their teachers for the coming school year. Parents may also join the PTA and purchase student agendas ($5). Classroom rosters will be posted on the front windows.
Please pay attention to the MNPS Standard School Attire for all PreK-12 students before purchasing your child’s school clothes. The Standard School Attire Policy will be enforced on the first day of school. Shayne’s shirt colors include the following in any shade: blue, white, black, pink, red and yellow.
If you wish to bring your child to school on the first day, we encourage you to do so. The doors will open at 7:30 AM for students and parents. Shayne parking is limited, but additional parking is available next door at Tusculum Church of Christ. Instruction will begin promptly at 8 AM. We ask that you take your child to the classroom, greet the teacher, and then make a graceful exit! Parents are invited to the Media Center that morning for "coffee and comfort" on their child's first day.
